World’s best keeper? Raya helps Arsenal get back on track
Arsenal’s goalkeeper David Raya has played a pivotal role in recent victories, including a crucial 1-0 Champions League win against Sporting. The Gunners’ clean sheet in Lisbon marked their seventh in the competition this season, a feat unmatched by any other team or player in the tournament.
Raya’s performance has earned praise from teammates, with striker Kai Havertz hailing him as a standout figure. “Unbelievable,” Havertz said after the match, emphasizing Raya’s value. “I think he’s still underestimated in the world of football, but for me, the last two seasons, he’s the best keeper in the world.” The Spaniard’s saves were instrumental in securing the victory, especially a late goal-scoring assist that sealed the result.
“I’m trying to help the team as much as possible in any single action, not just defending but commanding and on the ball,” Raya explained to Amazon Prime. His ability to control the game with his distribution and decision-making has transformed Arsenal’s attacking play, according to manager Mikel Arteta.
Despite being sidelined in Arsenal’s earlier setbacks, Raya’s absence didn’t hinder the team’s progress. He was rested during the defeats to Manchester City and Southampton, with Kepa Arrizabalaga starting both matches. However, Arteta’s choice of Kepa drew criticism after City’s goal, which highlighted the importance of Raya’s contributions.
Raya’s season has been marked by consistency, with 22 clean sheets in 41 appearances across Europe’s top leagues. His Premier League tally of 15 clean sheets in 31 matches places him at the forefront of the competition. The former Brentford player is now a key leader within the squad, stepping up when needed to stabilize the team.
“Many positions have very similar situations and demands right now, and the players have to adapt to that,” Arteta noted. “But apart from the qualities of David, the courage, the will to do certain things, that’s when you can reach another level.”
While Raya remains a central figure in Arsenal’s success, Arteta refrained from declaring him the best goalkeeper globally. “He’s extraordinary, magnificent, incredible,” the manager said. “I don’t know the right adjective. We are so happy to have him.” The Gunners hope Raya’s individual accolades, such as the Golden Glove trophy, will align with their pursuit of team glory in the upcoming season.
