According to the study published in PLOS Medicine, every additional hour spent in prolonged sedentary behavior each day corresponded to a ten percent increase in cancer mortality risk. However, swapping out sitting time for movement produced notable benefits. Substituting one hour of sitting with light activity resulted in a twelve percent reduction in cancer death risk. Replacing thirty minutes of sitting with moderate exercise lowered risk by eight percent, while dedicating just five minutes to vigorous activity was associated with a twenty-two percent decrease in mortality risk.

"The findings reinforce existing public-health recommendations that regular movement throughout the day is an important component of cancer prevention," Spear explained.

Existing research has already connected sedentary behavior to various health conditions including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and multiple types of cancer. The current study adds another dimension by highlighting that the pattern of sitting matters as much as the total duration.

Dr. Spear outlined several practical strategies for incorporating more movement into daily routines. She suggested standing and moving every thirty to sixty minutes, taking brief walking breaks especially after meals, choosing stairs over elevators, walking while on phone calls, and weaving light activity throughout the day.
