Over the past several months, Hunter has been sharing his story through various podcast appearances. He has discussed what it meant to grow up as Biden's son while his father served as president. This transparency comes after receiving a full federal pardon in December 2024, which gave him more freedom to speak openly about his experiences.

Family First

When asked directly on NPR's "Newsmakers" whether he wanted his father to run for re-election, Hunter's answer was straightforward. "No. No," he replied without pause.

"I told him this, is that I would like I'd done my entire life, is that I supported whatever he thought was best as it related to what he wanted to do to serve."

Hunter explained that keeping his family together was his highest priority during those years. "There was nothing that was more important to me than getting my dad back, getting my family back," he said. He noted that the presidency fundamentally shifts how a leader connects with loved ones.

"A president — it's almost impossible for a president to be fully present in the lives of the people that he loves the most, because it is literally all-consuming. It is an all-consuming thing."

Setting the Record Straight

Hunter also pushed back against media reports claiming he had urged his father to stay in the race. He called these accounts inaccurate, saying, "Literally nothing could be further from the truth, and I think that they know that."

He questioned the logic behind such narratives: "But just from a logical perspective, what would I possibly have to gain to continue to be the target that I was?"

Reflecting on the presidency, Hunter acknowledged it was a challenging period. "The four years of his presidency were, I think, by anybody's estimation, a really difficult four years — a lot of it my own making, but a lot of it just simply because of who he was and the position that he held."

He described maintaining sobriety while rebuilding his family during this time as one of the hardest things he could imagine anyone going through. "And more than anything, I just wanted to have my dad back," he said.

Why He Didn't Speak Up Sooner

When asked if he had shared his concerns with his father before the re-election decision, Hunter explained his reasoning. He revealed that he only spoke up after Joe had already made his choice.

"No, because I think it's unfair for me to do because this — because I know this also. There's only one thing my dad cares about more than his service, and that's me and my mom, my sister, and his grandkids, my children."

Hunter elaborated that family meant everything to his father. "There's only one thing that he cared about more than his job, and that's his family. And for somebody in his family, particularly me, to say, 'Dad, please don't do it,' I don't know how — I think that's incredibly unfair to do to somebody."

He expressed his wish not to be the obstacle preventing his father from pursuing what he felt was his purpose. "I would never want to be that. I would never want it to be the reason that he didn't fulfill what he believed was his duty and service."
