Mother Speaks Out After Son’s Fatal Fall from High-Rise Railing

A 23-year-old man’s death following a railing collapse in a London high-rise has prompted his mother to emphasize the preventable nature of the tragedy. Fiona Garrett, whose son Joshua Robbins lost his life, stated that the incident could have “happened to anyone” if similar safety lapses persist.

Incident Overview

Joshua Robbins fell from a communal landing outside his father’s flat on Newton Street, London, after checking if a delivered pizza was ready. The accident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on January 29, when police were called to Holland and Thurston Dwellings in Holborn. Despite swift action by emergency services, Joshua was declared dead at the scene.

Mother’s Lament

“This was a catastrophic event that should never have occurred. It was entirely avoidable,” said Fiona Garrett, who was not present during the incident. She described her husband as “deeply traumatised” and burdened with “survivor’s guilt” after witnessing the tragedy.

Garrett recounted the moment: “Joshua leaned on the railing with his elbow, just to peek around the corner and see if the pizza was for them. He was giving instructions when the railing suddenly collapsed, sending him plummeting five floors to his death.”

Her son’s passing has led the family to launch a campaign titled No More Falls, advocating for mandatory safety standards in high-rise buildings. “His life mattered, so his death must mean something,” she insisted, expressing frustration over “platitudes” and a demand for tangible action.

Housing Association Response

Pippa Fleetwood-Read, chief executive of Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association (ISHA), which manages the site, shared a statement with Sky News: “Joshua’s tragic passing has deeply affected everyone who knew him. His parents, family, friends, and neighbors are all struggling, and we offer our heartfelt condolences during this difficult time.”

She highlighted the association’s efforts to support residents, including counseling services, daily on-site presence, and weekly updates. However, she noted that further comments would be reserved until the police investigation concludes.

Police Investigation

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the inquiry is still in its initial stages. Investigators are collaborating with a forensic structural engineer and interviewing witnesses to determine the cause of the railing failure. “These enquiries may take time due to their complexity,” the force explained, adding that the coroner has been informed and a full report will follow the police findings.

Joshua’s family continues to receive updates and is supported by specialized officers throughout the process. They have also requested privacy during this emotional period.
