The City of Brotherly Love will see this sibling duo contend for the PGA Championship
The City of Brotherly Love will – As the PGA Championship unfolds near Philadelphia this week, it’s fitting that two English siblings find themselves in the spotlight for a major title. Matt and Alex Fitzpatrick, separated by four years, have transformed from a dynamic duo to individual competitors in the golf world. Their recent accomplishments have not only reshaped their personal trajectories but also redefined the narrative around their familial ties.
A Sibling Partnership Reimagined
Last month, the Fitzpatrick siblings celebrated a historic shared triumph at the Zurich Classic, marking a pivotal moment in their careers. While Matt secured his third victory in four tournaments, Alex’s success came after a career-defining win in India. This achievement, coupled with top-10 finishes in his first two solo PGA Tour events, has catapulted him into the limelight. “It’s kind of really hard to describe,” Alex Fitzpatrick told CNN Sports this week. “If someone had told me you’d win your first DP World Tour event and then a couple of weeks later you’d win on the PGA Tour, I’d have never ever believed you.” The young Englishman emphasized that the path to success has been anything but predictable.
“It’s very strange. I grew up following him around. That was kind of what I did when I was young. I got taken to all the tournaments. I wanted to stay at home and be with my friends, but my parents made me come to some of the tournaments before I started getting into them, so I kind of got dragged around a little bit as a kid, but not in a bad way,” Alex reflected.
For years, Alex’s name was overshadowed by his older brother’s dominance, particularly after Matt’s victory at the 2022 US Open. However, the balance of power has shifted dramatically. Alex’s recent performances have not only solidified his place on the PGA Tour but also redefined the family dynamic. “I’m probably known as Alex’s brother now, as opposed to him being Matt’s brother,” Matt Fitzpatrick admitted to reporters at Aronimink Golf Club, highlighting the reversal of roles. The older brother, once the focal point of attention, now finds himself in a supportive role, eager to see his sibling succeed.
A New Era for Alex Fitzpatrick
The past few weeks have been a whirlwind for the younger Fitzpatrick. Before his win in Louisiana, he was set to travel to Turkey for a tournament, but that plan was scrapped after securing victory in New Orleans. The win earned him a PGA Tour card through 2028, entry into the lucrative $20 million signature events, and a coveted spot in the second men’s major of the year. Entering the PGA Championship, Alex is riding a wave of momentum, following a tied-for-ninth finish at the Cadillac Championship and a fourth-place finish in North Carolina, where he maintained a one-shot lead through the final round.
His journey from a supporting figure to a rising star has been swift. Alex’s first major appearance, at the 2023 Open Championship, saw him finish tied for 17th—four shots better than his older brother. “The majors are the biggest events of the year. That was one of the goals of this year, to try and get into a major and I didn’t know how I was going to do it but they’re the most amazing events,” Alex explained. “And playing in the Open Championship, in front of a home crowd, was unbelievable, so I was super excited to try and get that opportunity again to play in one of the majors.”
“Listen, I love talking about my brother. It’s an amazing position to be in to have that privilege to talk about how well he’s doing. I’d so much rather have these questions, conversations, than the opposite of why he is not playing well,” Matt said.
Despite the high stakes, the brothers remain grounded in their bond. “He’s one of those people that doesn’t really give that much away. I know he’s always there if I need to call him or text him,” Alex noted. The relationship, once defined by competition, now thrives on mutual respect and shared ambition. Matt, who once dominated headlines, has embraced the role of a cheerleader, proud of his brother’s achievements. “I’m both impressed and ‘super proud’ of Alex’s recent accomplishments,” he shared. “It’s his career. It’s his choice. I’ll be there to help him as much as I can, if he wants that. But at the same time, I want him to be able to make his own decisions.”
The Road to the PGA Championship
The PGA Championship, held just a few miles from the City of Brotherly Love, offers a unique backdrop for the Fitzpatrick brothers. Alex, now a seasoned competitor, is well-prepared for the challenge. His recent form, including a strong finish in North Carolina, suggests he is in peak condition. Meanwhile, Matt, the veteran, brings experience to the table, though he acknowledges the shift in their sibling dynamic. “It would be a weird feeling if the pair were ever battling it out to win a tournament,” he admitted, reflecting on the newfound competition between them.
For Alex, the path to the PGA Championship has been both a triumph and a test. After years of being in the shadow of his brother, he has carved out his own identity in the sport. The Zurich Classic victory was a turning point, proving that he could stand on his own. “Everything has changed,” he said, underscoring the transformation in his career. From being a backup to a leader, Alex’s journey mirrors the evolution of the sport itself, where younger players are increasingly making their mark.
A Family Legacy in the Making
Matt Fitzpatrick, the elder brother, has always been a trailblazer in English golf. His early success, including the 2022 US Open, set a high bar for his sibling. Yet, Alex’s rise has not only challenged that legacy but also inspired it. The brothers’ shared history, marked by childhood memories of traveling to tournaments and the constant comparison, has now become a source of pride rather than pressure. “It’s a fantastic position to be in,” Matt said, expressing his contentment with the current balance. “I’ve said already, it’s his career. It’s his choice.”
As the PGA Championship approaches, the Fitzpatricks are poised to make history. Their journey from sibling rivalry to collaborative success highlights the evolving nature of their careers. While Matt remains a consistent force in the sport, Alex’s meteoric rise underscores the opportunities available to younger generations. The tournament, which serves as a platform for both, will be a testament to their individual growth and the enduring strength of their family connection. Whether they face each other on the course or celebrate each other’s victories, their story is one of resilience, ambition, and the unbreakable ties of brotherhood.
The Fitzpatrick brothers’ tale is more than just a narrative of golfing prowess; it’s a reflection of how ambition and perseverance can redefine family roles. From the bustling cities of England to the prestigious stages of the PGA Tour, their journey has been marked by both personal triumphs and shared moments. As they prepare to take on the challenges of the PGA Championship, the golf world watches with keen interest, eager to see how this sibling duo will continue to shape their legacies. The tournament is not just a test of skill but also a celebration of the bond that has fueled their success, offering a glimpse into the future of English golf and the enduring power of brotherly love.
