NYPD Officer Dies in Medical Episode During Deployment to Kuwait in Iran War
A New York City police officer has passed away during a mission in Kuwait as part of the ongoing conflict against Iran, as confirmed by local and state authorities. Sorffly Davius died on Friday at Camp Buehring, according to New York Governor Kathy Hochul. The incident occurred while he was serving abroad, marking a tragic loss for both his family and the NYPD.
Military Service and Tributes
Davius, a decorated veteran of the Army National Guard, served in the 42nd Infantry Division and attained the rank of major, the NYPD noted in a social media statement. Prior to his overseas deployment, he was part of Joint Task Force Empire Shield, a unit tasked with protecting New York’s critical locations from potential threats. Hochul praised him as a “true Citizen Soldier” and emphasized his roles as a husband and father.
“Today, and always, we keep his family in our thoughts and prayers,” the department said. “May we never forget Officer Davius’ sacrifice and may his memory be a blessing.”
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch also honored Davius, stating in a joint tribute that “his career was a testament to service to both his country and New York City.” They highlighted his dual commitment to public safety and military duty.
Casualties in the Operation
As of now, seven U.S. service members have lost their lives in the joint U.S.-Israeli campaign against Iran, which has triggered retaliatory attacks on American bases across the Middle East. Six of these fatalities occurred in Kuwait during the military operation, while a seventh service member succumbed to injuries from a March 1 assault on U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia, as reported by U.S. Central Command.
NBC News has sought comments from the National Guard and U.S. Central Command to provide further context. The tragedy underscores the risks faced by service members deployed in the region, balancing their roles as citizens, first responders, and soldiers.
