Machete-Wielding Knifeman ‘Lucifer’ Attacks Three at Grand Central Station

At the heart of New York City’s busiest transportation center, a 44-year-old man armed with a machete launched a sudden assault, leaving three individuals injured before being shot dead by law enforcement. The incident, which caused train delays, unfolded when the suspect, identified as Anthony Griffin, targeted unsuspecting commuters in a subway platform attack.

Victim Details

Griffin’s attack resulted in severe injuries to two men, one 84 and the other 65 years old, who were slashed across the head and face. A 70-year-old woman also sustained cuts to her shoulder. Despite attempts to disarmed him, the assailant remained defiant, repeatedly declaring his identity as “Lucifer” before officers intervened.

Authorities’ Statements

“Innocent people were attacked in a senseless act of violence,” stated New York Governor Kathy Hochul, addressing the incident. The mayor, Zohran Mamdani, commended the police for their swift action and announced the release of body camera footage from the scene.

Suspect’s Background

According to NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Griffin had a history of prior arrests but no documented record of being classified as an Emotionally Disturbed Person (EDP). The attack began at Vernon Boulevard–Jackson Avenue in Queens, where he boarded the 7 train en route to Grand Central-42 Street station.

Police Response Timeline

Two transit officers nearby were alerted at 09:40 EDT (13:40 GMT) as the suspect, wielding a large knife described as a machete, moved erratically through the station. After ignoring at least 20 commands to lower the weapon, he advanced toward officers with the blade extended. One officer fired, striking him twice, and emergency teams administered care. The suspect later succumbed to his wounds at Bellevue Hospital.

All three victims were transported to the hospital with injuries deemed non-life-threatening. Authorities have since advised residents to stay clear of the area as the investigation continues.
