Coachella Kicks Off with Sabrina Carpenter and Surprise Guests

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival began its 2024 edition with a unique twist, as pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter took the stage for her first headlining appearance. The event featured unexpected appearances by Susan Sarandon, Will Ferrell, and Sam Elliott, blending modern pop with classic Hollywood flair.

Themed Performance and Unplanned Cameos

Carpenter transformed the Empire Polo Club grounds into a cinematic scene, dubbing it “Sabrinawood.” Her set opened with a short film where she was pulled over by actor Sam Elliott during a midnight drive. After Elliott’s humorous leniency, she stepped onto the stage. Later, comedian Will Ferrell joined the performance, impersonating an electrician for comedic effect.

Weather disruptions also marked the festival’s debut. Strong winds forced the cancellation of DJ Anyma’s set following Carpenter’s performance. The Coachella organizers announced this decision in a statement on Instagram:

“Due to strong wind conditions affecting Anyma’s stage build, he is unable to perform tonight. Coachella and Anyma have made this decision together with your safety as the priority.”

Environmental Concerns and Festival Impact

Local authorities warned of harsh conditions, citing wind gusts reaching 25 mph on Friday. An air quality advisory was issued for the Coachella Valley from Friday afternoon until Sunday morning, urging caution for those with respiratory sensitivities. The National Weather Service emphasized:

“Particle pollution can get deep into the lungs and cause serious health problems such as asthma attacks, heart and lung disease symptoms, and increased risk of lung infections.”

Despite the weather challenges, the festival proceeded as planned. Additional performers on Friday included KATSEYE and Disclosure. Saturday’s lineup will feature Justin Bieber, with Karol G set to headline on Sunday. A mix of UK artists like Wet Leg, Lambrini Girls, Little Simz, and FKA Twigs also graced the stages. The lineup will repeat next weekend, continuing its two-week run in Indio since 2002.
