What is the ‘Deeply read’ list?

The Guardian has long tracked how readers engage with our journalism. Click counts offer insight into an article’s potential significance or popularity, but measuring the time readers invest in each piece provides a clearer picture of its quality and impact.

Like many publications, we’ve traditionally highlighted popular content through a ‘Most viewed’ list. However, these rankings frequently overlook compelling journalism on less mainstream subjects.

Our new ‘Deeply read’ list focuses on the time readers spend with articles, uncovering a broader spectrum of content that garners deeper engagement. This list is featured on regional homepages, tailored to mirror the interests of local audiences.

Not every entry is lengthy. We developed a metric comparing reader engagement time to article length, ensuring the list includes varied topics, formats, and lengths.

We aim to provide a more diverse and in-depth selection of content through this approach.
