Wireless Festival boss defends Kanye West appearance

Wireless Festival Director Supports Kanye West’s Performance Amid Controversy
Following recent controversy, Melvin Benn, the managing director of Wireless Festival, has publicly supported Kanye West’s inclusion as a headliner. Benn urged the public to extend “forgiveness” to the rapper, who faced backlash for his July appearance. Sponsors like Pepsi withdrew from the event, and political figures expressed criticism, citing his past actions.
Controversy Over Kanye’s Past Statements
Kanye West sparked debate last year with his song “Heil Hitler” and the sale of swastika-themed T-shirts. He later issued an apology, attributing his remarks to his bipolar disorder. Benn emphasized that West’s actions, while troubling, should be judged in context, highlighting his personal commitment to forgiveness.
“Forgiveness and giving people a second chance are becoming a lost virtue in this ever-increasing divisive world,” Benn stated. “What Ye has said in the past about Jews and Hitler is as abhorrent to me as it is to the Jewish community, the prime minister and others that have commented—and to Ye now also.”
Benn also shared his own experience with mental health, noting that someone close to him has struggled with illness for 15 years. He described witnessing “many episodes of despicable behaviour” that required him to forgive. “If I wasn’t before, I have become a person of forgiveness and hope in all aspects of my life, including work,” he added.
Regarding West’s performance, Benn clarified that the festival is not providing a platform for his political views. “We are only allowing him to perform songs that are currently played on radio and streaming platforms and enjoyed by millions,” he explained. Benn urged audiences to reconsider their reactions, stating, “I would ask people to reflect on their instant comments of disgust at the likelihood of him performing—and offer some forgiveness and hope to him as I have decided to do.”
The UK government is currently evaluating whether Kanye West should be permitted to enter the country. Wireless Festival remains committed to its decision, emphasizing that it aligns with the broader cultural impact of West’s music.
