What we know so far about rescue of US airman in Iran
Following the downing of a US F-15 fighter jet over southern Iran on Friday, the United States has reportedly retrieved the missing crew member. President Donald Trump highlighted the operation on Sunday, calling it “one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations” in military history and announcing the airman’s safety via social media.
Complex Rescue Efforts
Two individuals were aboard the jet when it was shot down. Both ejected from the aircraft, with one already secured by US forces before the latest mission. Iranian authorities confirmed the jet was intercepted by their air defense systems. While details of the rescue remain unclear, a source described it as a “huge” combat search and rescue operation in the mountainous region of southern Iran.
“Their number-one priority is to stay alive and to avoid capture,” said Jennifer Kavanagh, a military analyst at Defense Priorities. “They’re trained to – assuming they’re physically capable – get away from the ejection site as quickly as possible and conceal themselves for safety.”
Deception and Coordination
The rescue involved a high-stakes operation where the CIA played a pivotal role. According to reports, the agency tracked the airman in a mountain crevice and relayed his position to the Pentagon. During the mission, a deception campaign was reportedly underway, with US forces misleading Iranian troops about the pilot’s capture.
Iranian state media claimed troops from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) shot down a US drone while searching for the missing airman. The drone crashed in Isfahan province, as reported by the IRGC’s public relations office. Earlier, Iran had stated it aimed to recover the American alive and offered rewards to citizens for assistance.
Details of the Mission
The pilot, a colonel, was described as being “behind enemy lines” in the treacherous Iranian mountains, evading capture for over 24 hours. Senior US officials monitored his movements continuously. Trump noted that the operation involved sending dozens of aircraft into Iran, with no American casualties reported.
Additional complexities emerged as the rescue unfolded. A helicopter transporting the recovered pilot was struck by small arms fire, causing injuries but allowing it to land safely. The earlier retrieval of the pilot reportedly included an A-10 Warthog aircraft hit over the Gulf, with its pilot ejecting before being rescued.
Geographical Uncertainty
The exact location of the F-15’s crash remains unconfirmed. Iran’s state media mentioned two provinces – Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, and Khuzestan – as possible sites. Despite the uncertainty, the US military’s coordination and rapid response underscored the urgency of the mission.
