A suspect was fatally shot during a shooting at Old Dominion University on Thursday morning, leaving two individuals with critical injuries. The attack occurred in Constant Hall, according to the university’s emergency alert. The assailant began firing around 10:49 a.m., prompting an immediate response from campus authorities.
Classes were suspended across the main campus after the incident, which was initially reported as an active threat. By 11:30 a.m., the university confirmed the situation had escalated to an “active shooter scenario,” stating the perpetrator had been “neutralized.” The injured parties were transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in critical condition, as noted by a hospital representative.
“I have spoken with university leadership. My Administration remains in close contact with local emergency responders as state support is being mobilized to assist ODU and Norfolk,” said Gov. Abigail Spanberger in a post on X.
Following the event, Norfolk Police and the Washington Field Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arrived at the scene. The university emphasized that there is no longer a danger on campus but urged individuals to stay clear of the area. President Brian O. Hemphill highlighted the institution’s commitment to campus safety, stating, “We are deeply committed to safeguarding all Monarchs and ensuring a secure learning, living, and working environment at all times. We take this responsibility very seriously and remain vigilant in our efforts to maintain a safe campus.”
